The 3.2kg book published by Marshall Cavendish has swept a slew of prizes, and is lauded for its historical significance.
SINGAPORE – Khir Johari’s The Food of Singapore Malays: Gastronomic Travels Through The Archipelago – a tome that took 14 years from conception to publication, and which weighs an impressive 3.2kg – has won the triennial National University of Singapore Singapore History Prize.
Through the lens of the Malay archipelago, the 600-page volume establishes Singapore’s pre-colonial status as “the New York of the Nusantara” via essays, more than 400 photographs and 40 recipes. It also pays particular attention to how journeymen, migrants and traders of the area were integral to shaping the island’s unique culinary landscape.
There was also a keen awareness of the precarity of oral histories, as he raced against time to interview those still with memories of a bygone era. Its recognition by the triennial NUS Singapore History Prize on Oct 24 shines a light on the work’s scholarly and historical ambition beyond superficial impressions of it as a coffee-table cookbook.
Reviving Qixi: Singapore’s Forgotten Seven Sisters Festival by Lynn Wong and Lee Kok Leong was first runner-up; while Theatres Of Memory: Industrial Heritage Of 20th Century Singapore by Loh Kah Seng, Alex Tan, Koh Keng We, Tan Teng Phee and Juria Toramae came in third.
