OPINION | The ANC’s longstanding problem of holding its political deployees accountable was crystallised in Fikile Mbalula's recent outburst about Pravin Gordhan. A lack of accountability will inevitably lead to mudslinging, says CoruscaKhaya.
Over the past few weeks, the ANC has managed to illustrate its own extremities as a political party and the governing party of the country. In December 2022, it ended its administrative interregnum by appointing a new cohort of leaders who were expanded from the traditional six to a structure of seven.
In the expansion, the party acknowledged that its scale of operations and footprint warranted more administrative resources and added a new position of a second deputy secretary-general. In the preceding years, the administrative nucleus of the party had been decimated by the loss of its deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte who passed away, and the suspension of its secretary-general Ace Magashule, whose approach to administrative governance mirrored a living monument to incompetence.
