South African wheelchair tennis star Kgothatso Montjane remained upbeat after a hard-fought doubles defeat at the French Open.
Found positives , Montjane found positives in the performance, particularly given the limited time she and her partner have spent competing together.
“But the score didn’t look as bad as I thought. Considering how we started, I think we just lack chemistry, me and my doubles partner, because we haven’t really played a lot together. ” The match marked only the third time the duo had partnered on court, and Montjane acknowledged that communication remains one of their biggest challenges. With little shared language between them, exchanging information during matches has not always been easy.
Facing opponents who have built a strong understanding of each other’s games over time highlighted the importance of familiarity in doubles competition. Kgothatso Montjane was particularly impressed by the aggressive style of one of their Chinese opponents.
“Our doubles is just about building up that sort of relationship and chemistry. ”However, celebrations were far from her mind as she focused on the demands of tournament play.
“I just see it as any ordinary working day for me. ” After a demanding schedule that included a late finish the previous evening, recovery was the priority. Montjane revealed that she and her team only returned around midnight before facing another early start. With her doubles campaign over, Montjane was looking forward to some much-needed rest and recovery.
For Montjane, the result may not have gone her way, but the experience gained alongside a new partner could prove valuable in the matches ahead.
