It's fair to say that Kevin McCarthy's path to obtaining the speakership may be a tortuous one.
FILE - House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., heads to his office surrounded by reporters at the Capitol in Washington on May 12. McCarthy has announced his bid for House speaker should Republicans take back the House of Representatives, but several factors point to a tortuous path to obtaining the speakership.will take back the House of Representatives, but as of Thursday, it’s looking like even if that proclamation becomes true, the Republican majority will be a narrow one.
McCarthy has already announced his bid for speaker of the House, but given the current electoral landscape, public comments made by Republican members of Congress and some new reporting by national outlets, it’s fair to say that his path to obtaining the speakership may be a tortuous one. Let’s start with the math. As of now, no news outlet has called the House of Representatives for either party. There are still too many ballots to count in West Coast states —— before such a call can be made. It is clear, however, that regardless of who wins, the chamber will be closely divided.
That’s a big deal for McCarthy, who needs a majority of the chamber to vote for him to be named speaker. If he only has a GOP majority of, say, 220-215, and every Democrat votes against his bid, he can only lose two Republican votes to still win. And there are members of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus saying that they aren’t ready to back McCarthy.
“There’s many times where we have come to the leader, the minority leader, over the last two years and asked him to fight on various opportunities and various issues, and I have not seen the demonstrated fight that we’re looking for,” Virginia Rep. Bob Good|
