Premier Soccer League Orlando Pirates have had some stellar names down the years and some of them didn’t reach the heights expected of them. Kermit Erasmus was named one of the 50 most talented young players in world football in a piece titled “The 50 most exciting teenagers on the planet” in 2007. That list included Karim Benzema, Sergio Aguero, Angel di Maria, Gareth Bale and Alexandre Pato. Erasmus has represented 11 clubs across five countries throughout his career.
That’s impressive, in a way, but also indicates that he never quite settled and called one club home for an extended spell. In his long career, Erasmus has only won seven honours and all of those were in South Africa, including three Betway Premiership titles. In that competition, he’s managed 53 goals and 26 assists in 219 appearances. Erasmus joined the Buccaneers from Sundowns in September 2022 after feverish speculation linking him with a switch to Kaizer Chiefs.before settling back into South African football in 2019. It’s anyone’s bet where he could end up in 2024-25. Rumours indicate he could be returning to the Mother City to represent Chippa. In 2009 Erasmus, together with fellow South African Kamohelo Mokotjo and six other Feyenoord players, went out on loan to Excelsior as a result of a new partnership between the Rotterdam-based clubs.Pirates have held the upper hand in recent meetings between these great Soweto rivals. The Buccaneers have won the last three meetings across all competitions, including each of the last two in the league. That stopped a curious and somewhat surprising run of five consecutive wins for Chiefs in Soweto Derby league clashes with the Sea Robbers. Most memorably, Yusuf Maart scored the only goal, and what a goal it was, in a 1-0 win for the Glamour Boys in October 2022 .
