A former Kenyan international footballer has criticized the Kenyan Football Federation (FKF) for considering South African coach Benni McCarthy as a potential replacement for Engin Firat. McCarthy, a former Manchester United first-team coach, is reportedly the frontrunner for the position, but the FKF has yet to make a final decision.
The former Harambee Stars striker voiced his concerns about McCarthy's lack of familiarity with Kenyan players, stating that it would be a significant challenge for the South African legend to succeed as the national team's coach. He believes McCarthy would need considerable time to learn about the team and its players before he could be expected to deliver results. The FKF is currently searching for a suitable replacement for Firat, who resigned from his position in December 2024 after failing to qualify the Kenyan team for the next stage of competition. Firat cited unpaid salaries from the FKF as the reason for his departure, a claim that the football governing body confirmed and agreed to rectify.
