A mosque and a church were set ablaze in Kibra on March 27 night in the aftermath of anti-government protests mobilized by opposition leader, Odinga. The fighting between two rival gangs escalated after a series of rallies in the slum addressed by opposition leaders on the second day of mass demonstrations against the high cost of living and a victory Odinga claims was stolen from him in 2022's election. Knife-wielding gangs in Nairobi's informal settlement Kibra and Mathare attacked several journalists who covered the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition protests. In the brazen attack by the gangs, they stole the scribe's equipment and their mobile phones among other valuables. The Media Council of Kenya has spoken out against attacks on journalists during the Azimio la Umoja demonstrations, saying that the acts threaten the freedom of the press. Meanwhile, the High Court declined to stop the demonstrations, following an application by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who argued that the protests had caused massive disruptions with businesses affected.
