Kenora’s Jeff Gustafson wins his ‘Stanley Cup,’ earning US$300,000 in prize money and an automatic invitation to compete in next year’s tournament
When the fishing hours for the Bassmaster Classic concluded last week, Jeff Gustafson was more than 70 kilometres up the Tennessee River from the check-in site in Knoxville.
“Somebody is always the hero on the last day and I had left the door wide open. I thought I had blown the greatest opportunity I had ever had.The last of 25 anglers to have his catch weighed on the final day at the University of Tennessee’s basketball arena, Gustafson won by less than two pounds over runner-up Bryan Schmitt of Maryland.
Gustafson, 40, has fished on the elite Bassmaster series for five years. In that time, he has 14 top-20 finishes and won one other event in 2021, also on the Tennessee River. “This time I am a little scared for the tax implications,” Gustafson said with a laugh. “Not much is going to be spent until that is figured out.”
The lure that he tossed hundreds of times – a plastic shad hooked on a 3/8-ounce jig called a Smeltinator – suddenly seemed to lose its appeal.
