The last man to lead the Diamonds to a trophy on this weekend's SPFL Trust Trophy Final, his triumph in 2008 and the club's push for promotion

Airdrie legend Kenny Black says it has been “far too long” since the Diamonds last lifted silverware and is backing player-boss Rhys McCabe to sink The New Saints in Sunday’s SPFL Trust Trophy Final.

But the ex-midfielder - who made over 250 appearances in the Diamond and won the trophy as a player in 1995 with the club - believes McCabe can end the long wait for glory against the Welsh Premier League champions. “I thought managing was difficult enough so to manage and play as well is something else. I’m sure Rhys has good people around him and he’ll lean on their input as well.

McCabe’s Diamonds could be seen as underdogs but Black says that was the case when his side stunned the Staggies. “We did it the hard way, in terms of extra-time and penalties, but I remember Marc Smyth scoring the decisive penalty and it was a great occasion with everything else the players had to go through in the league that season .“I can remember our old kitman, John Donnelly, who has sadly passed away now, being a big part of it.
