The 23-year-old came up short in his boxing semifinal Saturday in Birmingham, England. Sanford lost on points to Scotland’s Reese Lynch in the men’s 63.5-kilogram division. But by reaching the semis, Sanford earned the third-place medal. Despite the setback, it was a memorable week for Sanford. He reached the light welterweight division semifinal following three-straight victories.
The Canadian Olympian opened the boxing competition with a stoppage victory over Niue’s De Niro Pao and then followed that win with a points decisions over Lesotho’s Qhobosheane Mohlerepe and a solid 4-1 victory over Uganda’s Joshua Tukamuhebwa on Wednesday.The 26-year-old Mitton captured gold in the women’s shot put competition with a stunning effort in her final throw on Wednesday. Mitton delivered a toss of 19.03 on her sixth attempt to edge Jamaica’s Daniel Thomas-Dodd by five centimetres.
