and the emergence of Boris Johnson as her successor. When Tory activists gathered in Birmingham for their annual meet in 2018, it quickly turned into a nightmare for May.
Those scenes are ones that the leadership teams will be hoping to recreate when the four final candidates in the race to be the next Tory leader head back to Birmingham in September. On Tuesday,– after he had the smallest level of MP support at just 16 MPs. In the lead – once again – was Robert Jenrick, who boasts the most organised campaign team, on 33 MPs. Kemi Badenoch – initially the bookies’ favourite – was in second on 28 MPs.
So, what should she do? One option is an MP charm offensive – but her team have already been attempting to do that for some time. Badenoch’s direct nature means some MPs are wary of her as leader of the party – and have felt personally slighted in the past. After all, the Tory grassroots is already frustrated over their lack of say over recent leaders. They picked Boris Johnson only for MPs to choose to oust him from office through mass ministerial resignations that made it impossible for him to stay on.Then they picked Liz Truss as his replacement – over Rishi Sunak, who initially had the most MP backers. However, they still ended up with Sunak as prime minister – after MP pressure led to Truss resigning.
