What the Conservatives need if they are to win again is a leader willing to compromise over and over again
Kemi Badenoch arrives for a Cabinet meeting in March 2024
Badenoch will run on a campaign of ideological purity and a promise to return the party to “true” Conservative values. Announcing her candidacy, she dismissed the Tories’ offering at the election as “incoherent” and claimed they had “talked right yet governed left”. She wrote in: “The country will not vote for us if we don’t know who we are or what we want to be.” Her pitch to the Tory faithful is clear: we lost because we weren’t right-wing enough.
That is not Badenoch’s style. Outlining why she is standing to lead her party, she argued that “real leadership sets a principles-based vision about where to take the country and then inspires people to join that shared mission”. If it sounds nice in theory, in practice – in Britain at least – it is almost always a losing formula. Voters are sceptical of leaders who seem too zealous, too convinced of their own righteousness. Just ask the likes of Michael Howard, Jeremy Corbyn and Liz Truss.
