The conclusion has clearly been drawn that the only way to get Ottawa’s attention is to create a crisis
it’s the work of “a small group of extremists that have very little in common with the majority of Albertans.” Constitutional scholars say it’s madness and can’t work. Columnists are deeply displeased, affronted by such an unwelcome fit of pique at a time Canada is already mishandling a plentiful supply of other crises.Sign up to receive the daily top stories from the National Post, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
What Alberta doesn’t have — or at least feels it doesn’t get — is respect. Not to the degree you would expect of a province that contributes so generously to the rest of the country, anyway. The supporters of Smith’s plan — and Notley’s right that they’re only a minority for now since most of the province won’t get a vote until a new premier is already in office — do a lot of pointing towards Quebec. It’s a fact of Canadian life that Quebec gets respect in disproportionate amounts. If Quebec wants to constantly demand more powers from Ottawa, fine. If Quebec wants to treat the English language like a disease that needs to be eradicated, fine.
