Not only does election day hold the possibility of a Green victory, but islanders will vote — yet again — on whether to introduce electoral reform

Now here’s a statement you don’t hear every day: “The whole country is watching Prince Edward Island.”

Bevan-Baker is P.E.I.’s Green leader and, if polls are to be believed, he may indeed be set to form Canada’s first Green party government after the island votes on April 23. The soundings indicate the Greens are leading the Progressive Conservatives, with the Liberals in third place. Though P.E.I.

A victory in P.E.I. would thus be a big step forward, and perhaps in an ideal location: the province’s size and location outside the national spotlight could make it a handy spot to try out something as new to Canadians as a Green administration. While the gnomes and trolls of social media are busy searching out reasons to be offended in other parts of the country, Bevan-Baker and his caucus could get on with their experiment without having to offer ritual apologies for every minor misstep.

King opened his campaign by noting that, although the island economy is strong, “the economy only works when everybody gets a piece of it, when everybody feels part of it, and that’s the problem that I have right now. Right now, too many people from tip to tip are telling me they’re not part of the progress, they’re not part of the good times, so we have to offer something different.’’

“Our generation has done a terrible job of living on this planet. And I’m not just talking environmentally, I’m talking economically and socially as well. And we have to step up to the plate and take the action that’s required.”
