Some claim that Starmer was referring only to those who opposed his changes to deal with antisemitism when he suggested those who disagree should leave. But Starmer’s speech last week reveals something else. He made broader attacks on the party’s left,the party had changed “from a party of dogma to a party of patriotism” and “from a party of protest, to a party of public service”, before adding “if you don’t like the changes that we’ve made, I say the door is open, and you can leave.
Starmer was elected to lead the Labour Party in the UK Parliament, but not to dictate to the whole party. He stood for Leader on a now discarded policy agenda, promising unity andfor members in selecting candidates. This week he announced that Islington North members could no longer choose Jeremy Corbyn as their candidate.
