Sir Keir Starmer has quietly overturned Rishi Sunak 's decision to hand General Gwyn Jenkins the most senior security position in the Government.
The Prime Minister has cancelled the appointment of a top general as National Security Adviser, raising fears he will choose a more politically loyal candidate instead.
Some in Whitehall suspect his move to reopen the recruitment process shows the determination of the PM and his chief of staff Sue Gray to promote allies to key roles.
