Chris Philp accused Mr Starmer of being the 'wettest Labour leader' on crime as both parties jostle over law and order ahead of May's local elections.
The ad read:"Do you think it's right to raise taxes for working people when your family benefitted from a tax loophole? Rishi Sunak does."Delivering a speech on Thursday, the policing minister said:"When it comes to crime, Keir Starmer is a total fraud and my view is that he is the wettest Labour leader we've ever seen."
Mr Philp claimed Labour had voted"against keeping rapists and child sex offenders in prison for longer" - a reference to the party's decision to oppose theon the grounds it clamped down on the right to protest and brought in higher sentences for damaging a statue than the minimum sentence for rape. Mr Philp - who was appointed as chief secretary to the Treasury during Liz Truss's short-lived tenure as prime minister - is understood to have been the leading advocate of the controversial move to scrap the 45p tax rate for highest earners, which was later reversed in a dramatic climbdown.
