MOUNTAIN VIEW — Greg Calcagno’s family name adorns the stadium here at St. Francis, where he took over the West Catholic Athletic League football power that his father once coached. He led his team this season to the second seed in the top division of the CCS playoffs and coached them to the final blow in a back and forth first-round battle over Sacred Heart Cathedral.The Keanaaina family, he figures, assures him lots of it.
“There’s a freshman brother and another one coming in next year,” Calcagno said. “So, yeah, we’re excited.” The Lancers advance to a semifinal matchup with No. 6 Archbishop Mitty, which upset third-seeded Los Gatos. Possibly looming two weeks away: a championship rematch with top-ranked Serra, which beat St. Francis on its home turf in the CCS title game last season.
“It’s sad, seeing my coaches and playing with my teammates for the last time,” Mixon said. “We did a lot of first-time things. Beat Bellarmine at home. Played DI for the first time ever. … I was trying to give it my all this game. It was hopefully not our last game, but it is. … I’m just happy to be a part of this program. I can’t wait until the next level.”
The Lancers forced four punts, one turnover on downs and picked off SHC junior quarterback Aidan McGrath twice, including a 50-yard pick-six by senior linebacker Junior Fiaui that opened a 7-0 lead for St. Francis.
