The city’s Social Housing Registry waitlist has 12,000 people on it who qualify for rent-geared-to-income housing. Many will wait 10 years.

since 2018 and now the chair of OCH, I understand the importance of community/social housing. OCH provides truly affordable housing to more than 32,000 people. This type of housing is in short supply. That is why I am pleased to see such strong leadership from OCH in building more than 900 new affordable homes right now, and having thousands more shovel-ready projects. This is the type of action we need and it helps council get Ottawa’s fair share of funding for non-profit affordable housing.

We have a collective responsibility to build more supportive housing and more non-profit affordable housing, and to ensure our city’s existing community housing stock is preserved. OCH’s new building at 811 Gladstone Ave., opened in 2020 with 140 affordable homes including three- and 4-bedrooms, is a rarity in downtown Ottawa. The construction of 271 more affordable homes at 715 Mikinak Rd., is another small but positive step as we continue, inch by inch, to add much-needed affordable homes in our city.
