Kathleen Carroll, a Chicago area human resources executive who was devoted to mentoring and promoting women in leadership roles, has died at 55.
Kathleen Carroll was a senior executive for human resources at several major Chicago-area firms, including Lake Forest-based distributor W.W. Grainger, Inc., who was devoted to mentoring and promoting women in leadership roles while also fostering discussions on identity and equality. “Kathleen was an inspirational leader who challenged each of us to be the best version of ourselves, and in turn made Grainger a better place to work,” said Grainger Chair and CEO D.G. Macpherson.
In 2020, Carroll launched an initiative at Grainger called the BeBrave conversations — about identity and equality, with an initial focus on race, gender, age and sexual orientation. Carroll sought to make employees feel more comfortable discussing their perspectives and their backgrounds, colleagues said, and to that end, she and others in her department came up with a series of questions to ask one another, such as what they love about their hometown.
