EXCLUSIVE: The Prince and Princess of Wales headed to Cornwall last week, 40 years after William’s late mother Princess Diana made her official visit to the county
The Prince and Princess of Wales made their first official joint visit to Cornwall last week since taking on their new titles as the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall.
The royals met volunteers and helped students from the local marine school with maintenance work on a dinghy before enjoying a model boat race.Also at the museum, Kate was thrilled to be reunited with her former history teacher, Jim Embury. Kate instantly recognised Jim, who is now a volunteer at the museum, and broke protocol by hugging him. She fondly told him, “The things you taught me, I now teach to my children.
Their trip to Falmouth came after William’s visit to the county in November on his first official solo engagement since becoming the Duke of Cornwall. He visited Newquay Orchard, where he met organisations supporting the community and staff working for the Duchy of Cornwall. On her first official visit to St Austell in 1983, Diana met patients at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice. The matron at the time recalled Diana’s “warmth” and “time she spent with patients”.
“They’re a bright light and the world just falls in love with them with every royal outing. William and Catherine are keeping the monarchy going by keeping people invested, which they do so perfectly when they meet the public.”“I was extremely excited to meet Kate,” she said. “I’ve met William before but I hadn’t met Kate. As much as I think he’s a lovely guy, I was very excited to meet Kate yesterday and to actually see her in the flesh. She comes across as being such a lovely person.
“They said they intend to spend a lot more time in Cornwall because it’s important to them, which I think is lovely.” She added that the Isles of Scilly are an “absolute favourite” destination for William and Kate – the prince used to holiday there as a child with his parents and brother Harry. She said, “I think they’re trying, and I completely have sympathy with the idea, to clear their diaries for those important half terms.
