The future of long-serving Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika hangs in the balance as a potential summer exit looms.
Kaizer Chiefs ’ summer cull is underway, with one long-serving veteran reportedly on the brink of leaving the club. Sources close to Zitha Kwinika , the 31-year-old defender, indicate that he could seek a move before his contract expires in June. A loan switch is the most likely option. Interest in Kwinika’s services has been reported from clubs in Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.
His future at the club seems increasingly bleak, and a move away before the end of his contract appears to be a realistic possibility.Rushwin Dortley and Inacio Miguel arrived at the start of the campaign and have become Nasreddine Nabi’s first-choice pairing in the centre of defence. At best, Kwinika is the fourth or fifth choice in that position. Yes, he’s versatile and can fill in at right-back, but it’s unlikely he’ll play any minutes. Earning a reported R370k a month, that’s an expensive benchwarmer. Reports back in July indicated new boss from the defender in Turkey and those reports have turned out to be true. Kwinika, astonishingly, is the only remaining player in the Chiefs squad who was with the club when they won the league in 2015, aside from the outgoing Itumeleng Khune. Loan him out for one season and the should his new club take that salary on board, as is customary.Chiefs have huge faith in 20-year-old Wandile Duba and are willing to tie the young attacker down to a new three-year deal. Born in June 2004, Duba scored his first senior career goal in March 2024 as a 19-year-old. It was a winner, and an absolute screamer, against Golden Arrows. Fast-forward to 2024-2025 and Duba scored a brace to help Chiefs to a 2-1 win over Stellenbosch on Wednesday night. He’s back to his old tricks and Chiefs fans love him for it
