A former Kaizer Chiefs player believes the side's victory over Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby is exactly what they need at this stage of the season to close the gap on log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns.
Chiefs edged their rivals 2-1 at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, before Sundowns were beaten by the same scoreline by Maritzburg United later in the day. With 11 matches to go, Amakhosi are 16 points behind Sundowns, who have played 23 matches. Former defender, Isaac Mabotsa is of the opinion that Chiefs have a chance in the title race.
"Talking from experience, winning the derby is a morale booster. They just have to take it one game at a time. You saw years ago when Chiefs were leading by about 13 points and Sundowns came back. It's possible for it to happen again, as long as Chiefs win their games, they will have a chance to be on top," Mabotsa told Soccer Laduma.
"It was a crucial game that Chiefs needed to win. Pirates is a big team, so it was a big boost for Chiefs. Their game plan was spot on. If you check, they did not allow Pirates to play. They were forcing them to play route one, which was good for Chiefs to win the ball."
