Just four months into his three-year contract with the French club Montpellier, promising fly half Kade Wolhuter could well be mulling over a return to South Africa

The former Paul Roos and Western Province Craven Week player, whose omission from the SA Schools team for signing with Montpellier was controversial news in Cape Town, arrived back in the country a day before the Covid-19 coronavirus-enforced national lockdown.

Former Sharks centre Andries Strauss, who is guiding Wolhuter’s career in his capacity as the athlete manager at CSM Sports and Entertainment, confirmed the interest in his client. But he was at pains to point out the lengthy remainder of his contract with Montpellier.“There are talks taking place, but nothing has been decided,” he said.

Strauss denied our source’s claim that his client was unhappy at Montpellier because they didn’t seem to have immediate plans for him. Strauss said he was surprised that there was so much hype around the youngster’s movements, putting the heightened interest in Wolhuter down to there being no live sport at the moment.A junior contract hovers in the region of R300 000 to R400 000, but talk is that the bidding war could drive Wolhuter’s price up to R1 million for the union that wins it.
