A juvenile gray whale washed up on the shore near the iconic Marine Room restaurant in La Jolla on Thursday afternoon, officials said.
Researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's La Jolla laboratory responded and found the marine mammal in shallow water south of La Jolla Shores. A NOAA spokesperson described the whale as approximately 24 feet long and fairly thin.A 1-2 year old male gray whale lies deceased on the beaches in La Jolla on Feb. 23, 2024.
Around 11 a.m., the whale was being loaded onto a tow truck by San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguards and Scripps researchers. It was not immediately clear where the whale was being towed.Sign up for NBC San Diego newsletters. The whale was still alive when it landed ashore but died overnight, NOAA said. At this time, it is not known why or how the whale became stranded in the sand. NOAA researchers took samples, which will help them identify the cause of death.NBC 7 San Diego
