Alexandre Trudeau, an author and documentary filmmaker, is currently a member of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, a scholarship charity mired in controversy over a 2016 donation that a Globe and Mail report linked to an alleged influence campaign by the Chinese government.
The $200,000 donation — $140,000 of which the foundation says the charity actually received — was connected to two Chinese businessmen and sent to the foundation after the Liberals came to power in 2015.But the charity has not emerged unscathed from the political scrutiny that followed earlier media reports that Beijing interfered with Canada’s 2019 and 2021 federal elections, including efforts to support candidates — primarily Liberals — thought to be favoured by the Chinese government.
But in an interview with Quebec newspaper Le Devoir, Alexandre Trudeau said he wanted to testify to defend the foundation’s reputation and share what he knows about the matter.
