WATCH | Justice Maya: ‘I’ve dipped my feet in the water and I’m ready for Chief Justice role’
Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya during her Judicial Service Commission interview in Sandton, Johannesburg, for the position of the country’s next Chief Justicesaid being appointed to the Constitutional Court nearly two years ago was the “biggest moment” of her life. She now understands that the role of the country’s Chief Justice comes with “enormous responsibility,” which she is prepared to take on if appointed.
"I’ve found out this job is difficult, to say the least. But I am confident now more than ever that I can do it with the support, of course, of my colleagues and smart management."This is not Maya's first interview for the Chief Justice position. In 2022, she was the JSC’s preferred candidate, but Ramaphosa ultimately appointed Zondo.
"That was 20 months ago the person who sits in front of you today is older and seasoned," she added.Maya vowed that, should she be appointed the country’s next Chief Justice, she would maintain the judiciary's independence and accountability, while also fostering stability, cohesion and public confidence in the judicial system.
