Tuesday, lobbing another threat against companies—likely Google, Facebook, Apple and Amazon—which already are contending with, among them, separate antitrust probes from Congress and the Federal Trade Commission.
The Justice Department did not say specifically what companies are being investigated, but referred to “search, social media, and some retail services online,” which most likely points to Google, Facebook, Apple and Amazon. The review will take into account “widespread concerns” from consumers, businesses, and entrepreneurs about the power and dominance of Big Tech.
The point of the review is to “assess” the competitive conditions in the market, but the DOJ said it will “seek redress” if it finds any violations of antitrust law.. “Without the discipline of meaningful market-based competition, digital platforms may act in ways that are not responsive to consumer demands,” said Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim in a statement. “The Department’s antitrust review will explore these important issues.”: Last month, the DOJ and FTC reportedly decided which agency was going to investigate each of the largest tech companies, with the DOJ getting Google and Apple and the FTC getting Facebook and Amazon.
