Liverpool will have a better idea on where they are currently at after Sunday's trip to Newcastle
One of the key themes of Liverpool's summer has been the difficulty of assessing just where the latest iteration of Jurgen Klopp's team are at in their development.
Four points from six so far, at home to Bournemouth and away at Chelsea, is a reasonable return, but both defensive frailties and attacking excellence have been on display already, leaving most none the wiser as to where this new-look Liverpool team are at present. Liverpool have lost just one of their 15 games against Sunday's hosts under Klopp but the Magpies are an entirely different proposition than what the German has generally been used to during a tenure that makes him the longest-serving manager currently active in the Premier League.
The Magpies' last victory over the Reds came back in late 2015 but they probably won't have welcomed Klopp's team to St James' Park with as much confidence since that disappointing December afternoon eight years ago. A defender and a midfielder are still desired by many, even if Klopp was once more seeking to play down the idea that the lion's share of the fee for Caicedo is still waiting to be spent following the £16m arrival of Wataru Endo.
