Hours before Julius Jones was scheduled to be executed, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt commuted Jones’ death sentence.
The day before Jones's scheduled execution, students joined the protests, carrying signs that read “Justice for Julius.”Putnam City North High School, John Marshall High School, Northwest Classen High School, and Star Spencer High School. “He was a really smart kid, and I see him; we see him when we look in the mirror," student Alasia Smith toldOklahoma City Public Schools issued a statement in support of the walkout.
"OKCPS supports our students’ rights to peaceful assembly and their freedom of expression. We have worked closely with students and student groups who wished to assemble today so we could provide them with a safe space to express themselves regarding an issue they are passionate about,” the statement read. “Our top priority is always to support the academic and social emotional needs of our students while maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment for all.
