Julie Andrews shares her thoughts on a potential return in Princess Diaries 3: 'I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older... In terms of us doing it, I doubt that now.'

Julie Andrews has indicated that a return for The Princess Diaries 3 is unlikely. The Princess Diaries 3 would be the latest iteration of the franchise that began in 2001. The Princess Diaries starred Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, an awkward teenager who discovered that she was secretly the heir to the Genovian throne. With Andrews playing Queen Regent Clarisse Renaldi, the grandmother of Mia, the two clashed often.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Andrews happily returned for the follow-up movie, which was released in 2004, but as Princess Diaries 3 was only recently announced to be in development again and is unlikely to hit theaters anytime soon, it would be too difficult for the actor to manage.

I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible. It was talked about very shortly after two [The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement] came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run. In terms of us doing it, I doubt that now.

Queen Clarisse has always been a central character in The Princess Diaries films. It was the chemistry between Andrews and Hathaway that really made the first two movies, with Andrews speaking highly about Hathaway in the past. Without the strong relationship between Mia and Clarisse, the emotional heart of the franchise is essentially removed. It simply wouldn't be the same without her.

Yet, Disney may try to do it anyway. If that's the case, a potential Princess Diaries finale could see Hathaway take up Clarisse's role from the first film. With Mia preparing another young girl for the throne, the movie could bring the franchise full circle. While The Princess Diaries 3 wouldn't be exactly the same without Andrews, it would still be possible to produce the film without the entire original cast.
