Matt Araiza trial slated for February; he wanted October trial in bid to clear name in 2021 incident and smooth possible return to NFL
A San Diego Superior Court judge on Friday said Matt Araiza cannot go to trial next month in a woman’s lawsuit accusing him and other former Aztec players of rape at an off-campus party.
Araiza’s attorneys insist their client will be vindicated. They want the trial as soon as possible in hopes Araiza can clear his name and resume his derailed NFL career.Araiza, a star punter at San Diego State University, was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in April 2022, then cut from the team when the lawsuit was filed four months later. Now 23, he’s been outside the league for more than a year.
Also Friday, Braner granted a summary judgment request to dismiss one of the defendants in the suit — the owner of the rental home on Rockford Drive where the party was held. The woman went to police a day after the party. The woman, who was 17 years old and in high school at the time of the incident, told San Diego police detectives she cooperated to avoid being harmed.
