Too many people have died or been injured because of impaired drivers in Southwestern Ontario, a London judge says.
Henning pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death and two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm for the crash on a drizzly summer evening. His pickup truck hit the curb during a lane change, sending it careening back across the road and into the path of another pickup truck driven by Cole Rutledge, 20.
Henning was also injured. Blood analysis at the hospital put his blood-alcohol concentration at 84 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, slightly over the legal limit of 80 milligrams.Henning pleaded guilty at the first possible opportunity and Ovens’ parents sent two letters of support to the court, arguing that incarceration wasn’t necessary for Henning’s rehabilitation.
He quoted four precedent cases involving impaired driving deaths, all from London, which had sentencing ranges from four to six years. “Ms. Gallant had aspirations to become a firefighter. She is no longer mentally or physically able to drive. Her dreams of becoming a firefighter are gone,” Orsini said. “Neither is able to actively engage in physical activities they once enjoyed. Mr. Rutledge has had difficulty sleeping, concentrating and controlling his emotions.”
