Judge orders New Jersey doctor to spend 3 Valentine's Days in jail for child assault

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – A New Jersey man who assaulted a 12-year-old boy at a ski resort on Valentine's Day 2016 will spend the next three anniversaries of his crime in jail.

Samuel Caruthers, 47, of Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, was sentenced Wednesday by Judge Thomas Critchley to spend three days in jail, in 24-hour increments, on Feb. 14, during every year of his three-year term of probation. Caruthers, an anesthesiologist, was convicted April 3 of endangering the welfare of a child, a third-degree crime, unlawful possession of a weapon, a fourth-degree crime, and simple assault, a disorderly persons offense. The jury found that on Feb. 14, 2016, while at Mountain Creek Ski Resort in Vernon, New Jersey, Caruthers assaulted a 12-year-old snowboarder by punching him in the face multiple times, striking him with a ski pole and causing injuries to the boy’s back, ribs and lip.

Officers investigating the incident had determined Caruthers was skiing with his son when the 12-year-old fell into him, said Vernon police Lt. Keith Kimkowski in 2016. Caruthers also was ordered to submit to psychiatric and personality evaluations, complete an anger-management program, perform 200 hours of community service work, have no contact with the victim and his family, submit a DNA sample and pay fines and fees of $1,455.This article originally appeared on Morristown Daily Record:
