The lawsuit claims New Jersey is responsible for worsening school segregation because of a requirement that makes students attend schools in their neighborhood
TRENTON — A judge on Friday ordered that the plaintiffs suing New Jersey in an ongoing school segregation lawsuit notify all 675 school districts in the state that they may join the case if they wish.
The plaintiffs however, said districts have had a chance to join the case since the case was first opened in 2018. Lawrence S. Lustberg, the attorney who argued the case for the plaintiffs, said that when a the New Jersey Charter Schools Association‘sBut, "even with that clearly stated open invitation, not one district has come forward," Lustberg said.
New Jersey is the sixth most segregated state among African American students and seventh most segregated among Latino students,The plaintiffs want the court to strike down provisions in state statutes that generally require students in traditional public schools to attend their neighborhood campuses and that require charter schools to give enrollment preference to students in host districts.case was filed May 17, 2018, on the 64th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court’s landmarkcase.
