San Antonio fighter Joshua Frnaco beaten decisively by Kazuto Ioka in Tokyo rematch after failing to make weight
Joshua Franco, right, of the U.S. punches Kazuto Ioka, left, of Japan in their WBO, WBA super flyweight world boxing title unification match in Tokyo, Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022. For Joshua Franco, disaster struck before the first punch was thrown when he weighed in 6 pounds over the 115-pound limit.
Perhaps his failure to make weight tipped the scales in favor of his opponent as Ioka won the 12-round bout at Ota-City General Gymnasium by unanimous decision to claim the title in a rematch of their New Year’s Eve battle six months ago at the same venue. “I need to make my combinations clearer, more noticeable for the judges,” Franco, 27, said in the lead-up to the fight.
Franco was the volume puncher the rest of the way but Ioka continued to apply the pressure with a persistent, accurate body attack and left hooks upstairs.
