Fortunately legendary coaches, like Eddie Reese at the University of Texas, know how to tweak champions. Gently Reese pulls him back to the pool and says “OK, OK, you’re right. I got this one wrong” and he alters the set to 5x150m. Schooling, quickly contrite, learns a lesson. “If the best coach in the world trusts my decisions, then I need to change the way that I speak to people. But he gave me that confidence to do so.”In Rio, Schooling flies. He is fastest in the heats and semis, with times of 51.41 and 50.83. No one else in this event goes below 51 seconds.
The buzzer sounds. He -- reaction time 0.61sec -- is equal first off the blocks. History’s chase begins.
