BREAKING: Toronto police arrest Joseph George Sutherland in the 1983 deaths of Susan Tice and Erin Gilmour
Nearly 40 years after the high-profile murders of two Toronto women, police announced they arrested and charged a man with the 1993 murders of Susan Tice and Erin Gilmour — the latest cold case to be cracked using genetic genealogy.
Police are now reviewing Sutherland’s past, pouring through his history to determine whether he may be tied to other crimes, police said. There had been 39 years “of asking who,” said McCowan, who noted his mother died two years ago but “would have been so relieved to that there had been an arrest” in the death of her only daughter.
Sutherland — who had been living in Toronto at the time of the arrest but had later moved to Moosonee, a remote town of 1,500 near James Bay — had never been a suspect or person of interest in the case before.
