Newgarden is just 15 points behind leader Marcus Ericcson heading into Sunday's Hy-Vee Salute To Farmers 300 presented by Google. That race is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Iowa Speedway.
Pato O'Ward, who was in the top five all afternoon, made a late run on Newgarden before settling for second.
