Cleveland's All-Star third baseman is among the 10% of players ever to reach the career milestone.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — José Ramírez watched Jhonkensy Noel make his big league debut last week in Baltimore as Noel smashed his first career home run in his first day on a major league roster.
Ramírez, 31, has played in parts of 12 seasons with Cleveland and is on his way to becoming the franchise’s most legendary hitter. He ranks in the top 10 in runs, total bases, doubles, home runs, extra-base hits, RBI, and steals. He has finished among the top four in American League MVP voting four times since 2016 and has the most extra-base hits in baseball since 2017 by a wide margin.
Certain career milestones are treasured by players above all others. Their debut, the first hit or strikeout, reaching salary arbitration after three years and free agency after six are all high on the list. But becoming a tenured veteran is an achievement that carries deep meaning for some. The Guardians were set to recognize Ramírez’s achievement in a closed-door clubhouse ceremony some time Wednesday evening.
Vogt said it is not something the Guardians particularly teach their baserunners, but it was a good baseball play. “He feels good,” Vogt said. “We’re going to see how he does throwing today and then decide what the next steps are.”next week representing Cleveland on the American League squad.
