This weekend in Liverpool it became unofficially official. Jordan Spieth is our local version of the world’s star-crossed hero, Rory McIlroy. While a 36-year-ol...

This week, Spieth turns 30 and he remains stuck in neutral in major championships. If you happened toSunday, I promise you I am not out to get athletes simply for turning 30. I shelved my belief that 30 was too old to achieve anything 38 years ago. It’s just a coincidence that the former Jesuit and Texas Longhorns golf star and the Cowboys quarterback were born two days apart in 1993.

At the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, Spieth and Scheffler actually tied. Scheffler finished strong with a four-under 67 while Spieth’s two-over 73 left both at even par, tied for 23rd. Neither was ever in the chase on the weekend. That’s not so unusual these days for Spieth.Having played 24 majors since his last win, he has seven top-10 finishes in that span. For the regular PGA Tour professional, that would be exemplary.

We think of him as forever in the hunt in the small-field Masters although in the last five tries he also has a T-21, a T-46 and a missed cut. McIlroy has as many top-10 majors finishes the last two years as Spieth has over those six years.the Scottish Open — so it’s not like he fell dramatically short of expectations this weekend. A constant tinkerer who lacks the natural flow of his swing from his earliest days, Spieth talked at the Scottish Open about how hard it is to recapture the magic.“I think I would have won [the Open Championship] on any course in 2017. I had won three weeks before. I had almost won the next two events. I was just playing that well,” he said.
