The social media star on his hyper-meta comedy thriller, starring him and director Sebastián Silva as avatars of themselves.
It’s also a façade that people care about movies. I feel like people care about TikTok trends way more. I think more young people can quote a viral sound than have seendid well, but it’s really hard to break the zeitgeist with a film or a TV show now.No, I don’t feel like that at all anymore. At this point it is strictly maintenance and strictly just trying to squeeze whatever dime I can that’s left. They go wherever you’re hot.
In 2020 they were coming in hotcakes, and I regret not taking some of them. I was like, “No, I can’t do American Eagle. That’s corny.” I’m like, what was I thinking? I would like to fully transition and never have to make a comedy video ever again. The scary part is that it’s not that heightened. There is one major piece that’s missing that makes it different, and it’s self-awareness. The character has no self-awareness, and I think I do. Sometimes it can waver.
With certain pop stars I see the more they get into cool culture and the cool scene, the less successful they become because you have to appeal to the masses. If you’re looking at what Dimes Square is doing, they’re not going to understand that at all. You do actually have to wave a Pride flag. And if you’re self-aware, you can’t do that. You won’t be able to physically do that.
Beyond your character, the film spends a fair amount of time with Sebastián’s housekeeper, Vero . It also explores classism in Mexico City. I think [Sebastián] wanted to make a point of just a broader point about the class structure within Mexico—the way that white rich Mexicans act and the white Latinos act. It’s a brave choice to make me, as the gringo, the one person with empathy towards this woman. When you are in this class of people, it feels like there is no getting up for air. It’s a constant barrage of things coming at you that you can’t escape. She’s not the smartest person.
