Exclusive: Jonathan Frakes describes the upcoming Strange New Worlds/Star Trek: Lower Decks crossover he directed as 'a flat-out comedy.'

Star Trek's Jonathan Frakes previews the upcoming crossover between Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks. Frakes is currently reprising his iconic role as Captain William T. Riker in Star Trek: Picard season 3 to great acclaim, but Jonathan is also one of the most accomplished directors in the Star Trek franchise.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant to raise awareness for Trek Against Pancreatic Cancer, Jonathan Frakes was asked about the Lower Decks crossover in Strange New Worlds season 2. Frakes is quite proud of the "hysterical" episode, which brings Lower Decks' Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome to the Starship Enterprise in live action.

Jonathan Frakes: I [directed] one [episode] in season two. And I'm waiting for the writers to decide what they're doing before I go back and direct another one in season 3. The one in season two that I directed... is a crossover with a couple of the actors from Lower Decks, which is, I gotta say, hysterical.

It's Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid. Mariner and Boimler come across into the world of [and] join the cast of Strange New Worlds. And it is just... it's a flat-out comedy. It doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not... Anson is a wonderful comedian. Rebecca is a wonderful comedian. Ethan's hysterical in the show. It's a really good fit to see these two casts together.

Strange New Worlds season 1 proved how adept the series is at jumping genres, and the episodes "Spock Amok" and "The Elysian Kingdom" were definitely on the comedic side. But the infusion of Jack Quaid's Ensign Brad Boimler and Tawny Newsome's Ensign Beckett Mariner will take Strange New Worlds' comedy to another level, and it sounds like the Enterprise's cast like Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn will match their ability to elicit laughter.
