The arrangement with Academic Orthopaedic Surgical Associates of Ottawa has increased surgical productivity by 20 per cent, hospital says.

“ Saturdays is not going to build the capacity we need,” Love said.

Others have said it has been more difficult to call in casual and part-time staff since the Saturday surgeries began, according to information seen by this newspaper. Nurses are paid $750 a day for 10-hour shifts working Saturdays with AOAO, which represents a premium over their hospital pay.Article content

Love described the partnership with AOAO as part of an integrated system, similar to the hospital’s partnership with Focus Eye Centre in that the less complex cases could be done at a dedicated site, while more complex and lengthy surgeries remained in hospital operating rooms.
