The Salford Foundation Trust is searching for a talented young musician to be the second recipient of the Johnny Marr Award, which provides a £1,000 grant to support their music career. The award was established by Johnny Marr, a renowned guitarist, to help promising musicians from Salford. Last year's recipient, John Denton, used the grant to buy a guitar and pay for lessons, and went on to headline a sold-out gig at Salford Lads Club.
That charming man is at again. Having put one budding talent on the road to fame Johnny Marr is back for an encore.
John and his band "The Height" - named after the area of Salford where they are from - then went on to headline a sold-out gig at Salford Lads Club, the Ordsall venue forever linked to The Smiths due to an iconic photoshoot famously used inside the album sleeve for The Queen Is Dead album in 1986. Entries for the second round of the Johnny Marr Award open on Tuesday, 31 October. It’s a fitting date as it’s also the 40th anniversary of the release of The Smiths’ breakthrough hit ‘This Charming Man’ in 1983 - and Johnny Marr’s 60th birthday.
In 2022, after John had wowed shoppers with his city centre performances, he told the Manchester Evening News: "I'd love to be the next Johnny Marr and just keep going to see where music can take me, It all started when my dad took me to a birthday party for one of his friends, and there was a karaoke machine. People were singing Highway to Hell by AC/DC.
Johnny Marr, whose guitar playing and songwriting graced The Smiths, his solo work, and more recently, the score for the James Bond film No Time to Die, said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the Salford Foundation Trust to launch this award, and to help John develop his musical career.”
