Interesting prediction about next week's primary ⬇️
Campaign signs at the Alabama Republican Party's winter meeting in February in Birmingham. Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill is predicting voter turnout of 28% to 32% for the primary one week from today.
That would be higher than turnout for Alabama’s last two primaries during midterm election years -- 25.6% in 2018 and 21.6% in 2014. “I think it will be a little bit higher because you’ve got a governor’s race that’s attracted a lot of candidates who are spending a lot of money,” Merrill said. “And then you’ve got an open U.S. Senate seat that’s breaking every record in the history of the state for the amount of money that’s been spent in a primary.”
Gov. Kay Ivey, seeking a second full term, has eight challengers for the Republican nomination next Tuesday. Katie Britt, Congressman Mo Brooks, and Mike Durant are waging a big-bucks battle for the U.S. Senate seat opening up with the retirement of Sen. Richard Shelby.Given those factors, Merrill was asked if it is disappointing that he expects only about one-third of voters to turn out next Tuesday. Merrill said fatigue from campaign attack ads is a factor.
“I’ve had three people tell me today they were sick and tired of all the negative advertising they’ve been seeing on TV and they’re ready for it to be over with,” Merrill said. “And for some people, that will just stop them from voting.”
