Former hero can't wait for the chance to say thankyou to the Hibs fans in person after being denied that opportunity with his swift move to Aston Villa five years ago.
John McGinn has been waiting five years for the chance to say a proper farewell to Hibs fans. He’ll finally get it tomorrow - but then is aiming to ruthlessly say adios to his old club's Euro adventure too.
“When I was there it was a special place to play, great people. We were fortunate to be relatively successful though I still feel we under-achieved in that spell, which hurts a little bit. I never got the chance when I left to show my appreciation to the fans or anyone there. Villa and Hibs had spoken about holding a friendly as part of the McGinn deal. But that never materliased and the 28-year-old Scotland ace is glad his first chance to return to Leith is on competitive business.
McGinn’s last goal for Hibs came in Europe and just six days before he completed his move to Villa. It proved massive as it clinched a 1-1 draw in Greece against Asteras Tripolis to secure a 4-3 aggregate win and progression to the Europa League third qualifying round.
