The lesson of the last few years is that the meaner you are to \u0027elites,\u0027 the more popular you become, even when those elites are running your own party
Rougier said the tone of the letter was “derogatory and belittling, unbecoming and petty,” and submitted that the Poilievre campaign should be fined by LEOC for its behaviour. .
But in this new populist era, where expertise is a handicap and you win by promising to smash-the-machine, Poilievre is valorized as a strong leader whose limitations in being able to live up to any of his promises are overlooked. But there is a worrying lack of discipline about any candidate and campaign that lashes out in all directions, all the time. The Poilievre campaign has become the Canadian political equivalent of Fight Club, a nihilistic rejection of institutions and value systems for confused and angry people who do not see possibility or purpose. No allowance is made for the complicated trade-offs and compromises that are inevitable in government.
We appear to be in a different time, when being mean motivates the marginalized to give voice to their rage.
