Amber Gallant and her family moved from Ontario to Bass River, where idyllic scenes like this iconic lighthouse make for a big change of pace.A lot was spinning around in Amber Gallant’s mind when she arrived in Nova Scotia this summer with her husband, kids aged 16 and nine, five cats and two dogs.The family had pulled up stakes in bustling auto-centric Cambridge, Ont., to move to Bass River, which lists clam digging and blueberry farming as two of its central industries.
For the first time ever, there are more than one million Nova Scotians. Canadians from elsewhere, meanwhile, are heading here at startling levels.From 2021 to 2022, 14,079 more people moved to Nova Scotia from other provinces than those who departed our borders for elsewhere in the country. Some were fleeing something — a brutal housing market, no elbow room, a government with a lax attitude towards the pandemic — but in many cases, they were searching for something Nova Scotia offered, a thing that they perhaps couldn’t identify until they landed here. The draw was also there for Emily Rogers, who grew up in Spryfield but left at the age of 10 when her mother said they were going to Ontario on vacation “and then never came back.”
