Rennehan also had the confidence that comes from growing up amidst a loving, encouraging family whose support did not waver when she came out as a gay woman at age 18, and left town that year “with just a dirty hockey bag” to work night shifts for local contractors for free while learning the builder’s trade.

“But,” she told me, “the years that followed were some of the best I’ve ever had” and she has been in the U.S. market ever since.
